Know the Differences Between Buying Color Diamonds from Regular Colorless Diamonds!

Similar to most other items, there is a lot to know about purchasing a diamond. Fortunately, there are tons of different websites that have excellent education portals. This way, one can teach themselves the basic information one needs to know to ensure no one is being taken advantage of. In addition, there are actual price lists on diamonds available to the general public. This means, that anyone has the ability to potentially check the prices they were quoted against the price lists to ensure they are fair!

Buying Fancy Colored Diamonds, on the other hand, are a little bit more confusing. On one hand, since the market is smaller and there are less suppliers there is not nearly as much diamond education available. Secondly, there is no price list, or even the ability to create one since each diamond is so unique and one of a kind. For these reasons, we decided to put together a short list of the differences between the two and what one should know when purchasing a colored diamond.

Understanding the Basics

All diamonds in the market are assessed according to the same basic categories, commonly referred to as the 4Cs. With colorless stones, the four most important diamond attributes (Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat Weight) are all of equal value. Only, with Fancy Color Diamonds the Color characteristic, naturally, outweighs all others.

Since these incredibly rare stones are glorified specifically for the colors they contain, this attribute stands above all others and will directly affect the value of the stone.

Defining the Diamond’s Color

The twelve different colors that fancy colored diamonds are broken down by are; Red, Blue, Violet, Pink, Purple, Orange, Green, Gray, Yellow, Brown, Fancy Black, Fancy White. However, although a pure, single colored diamond is considered more valuable, colored diamonds can contain one, two, or even up to three overtone colors. Furthermore, there are nine different intensity levels in which many of these diamonds can be found!

Selecting the Stones that Connect with you Most

The greatest thing about colored diamonds is that the price value is determined according to the rarity of the stone. Unlike colorless diamonds, where the more expensive the stone the more beautiful it is, colored diamonds work differently. Colors speak to people in different ways and can mean something entirely different to one person that it means to someone else. Therefore, if one connects more with a Yellow diamond than they do with a Blue one for example, there is no need to invest the additional expense since Yellow stones are priced significantly less than Blue diamonds.

Additionally, if someone loves the Orange color, but cannot afford an Orange diamonds, they can alternately search for a Yellow Diamond with a strong Orange secondary hue. Being that Orange isn’t the main color in the stone, it will be priced far less expensive than a stone with similar attributes in a pure Orange color, but can still give quite an orange appearance.

This is a 2.05ct, Fancy Vivid Orangy Yellow Diamond, Even though there is a rather strong Orange color, because Yellow is the dominant color in the stone it is priced quite lower than it would be if it were Orange..

Finding Professionals you can Trust

We live in a world where everyone is trying to make money and unfortunately not everyone is as perfectly honest as you would expect. For various different reasons, such as an inappropriate price per carat or an artificially colored stone that can potentially be placed in the hands of someone now aware of what they are purchasing, there is a need to have someone to consult with before making a purchase.
Read online reviews and check with others who they might have used for a good reference. Finding someone you can trust is a must!

Regardless of why a diamond is purchased, it is always surrounding some sort of a happy occasion. Whether its purpose is an engagement proposal, an anniversary present, a luxurious gift, or a wise investment – diamonds should always be bought with a smile!
