5 Creative Ways to Propose

When it comes to getting engaged, picking out the perfect ring is just the beginning. It might seem like the hard part is over, but now is the time to really get creative. Here are some ideas for a unique and meaningful marriage proposal.

1. A sentimental location

Maybe it’s where you had your first date, where you met, or where you said: “I love you.” If there’s a place that has special meaning to the two of you, take her there to reminisce about how much has changed in your time together, then finish with a proposal.

If these places are unromantic or inaccessible, try talking to her parents. Perhaps they have a beautiful engagement story you can replicate. If so, take her to the place her parents started their lives together and pop the question there.

2. Over the holidays

Christmas, New Years, Valentines Day and birthdays are all popular choices, and for good reason. The holiday season is about a family coming together, Valentines Day is about romance, and her birthday is all about her. But to shake things up, think about what you can do with other holidays. On Halloween, carve “Marry Me” into your pumpkin, or dress up in a suit, tie, and boutonniere and say you’re going as a groom this year. On St. Patrick’s day, present her with a bouquet of shamrocks held together with her ring. On Easter, set up an Easter Egg hunt, and hide the ring in a hollow egg. Festive proposals don’t have to be limited to the days with the highest expectations.

3. Set up a scavenger hunt

This is a great idea for a playful couple. You can make the scavenger hunt around your apartment or around your city– the scale is up to you (as long as the ring stays somewhere safe). If the clues are around town, send her to places with special memories; where you went last Valentine’s Day, her favorite coffee shop, the place you shared your first kiss. If the hunt is in your home, share a special moment or something you love about her in each clue. Either way, the final “treasure” should be you on your knee, holding a ring.

4. Spell it somewhere unexpected

Write “Marry Me” in magnets on the fridge, on the mirror in lipstick, even in french fries on her dinner plate. In summer, spell it in the sand. In winter, spell it in the snow. If you can wait an entire day until bedtime, spell it in glow-in-the-dark letters on the ceiling. Just make sure you’re somewhere nearby when she reads your message.

5. On a stay-cation

Lots of people propose on a big trip, but if you just spent a ton of money on a ring, going out of town might not be a feasible option. Instead, spend a day or evening doing something special in your own city, then finish with dinner at a fancy hotel restaurant. When she gets up to leave tell her you’ve reserved a room for the night, then stand behind as she enters a room filled with roses, candles, and champagne. When she turns around, you’ll be down on your knee holding out a ring.
